Where to go on a first date - a high-end bistro or casual chain restaurant?

Choosing the right location for that perfect romantic meal
Welcome my single readers

We at Maureen Tara Nelson Private Matchmaking wish all singles a very happy and exciting summer. Summer is the best time of year to meet someone, so if you are single, make sure you are taking advantage of the great weather and do something new and fun outdoors as a hobby... it's an excellent way to meet someone.

Dear MTN,

I was set up on a blind date from a friend. She told me that the guy is a very successful and attractive man in his late forties. I was very excited to meet him until he called and suggested we meet at Applebees. What do you think of his choice as a first date? I told my friend that if he is so successful why wouldn't he have selected a higher end restaurant? I really want to be open minded, yet I am not compatible with a man who thinks Applebees is a high end restaurant? Please let me know your views on this. My friend Margaret is a successful client of yours and she let me read your do's and don'ts that you give out to your new clients. I agreed with every one of them. I value your opinion. - Mary

Dear Mary,

I am happy to hear that you say you are open minded, because I believe you need to give this guy a chance, even though you don't agree with his first date choice. First of all, you are assuming this guy, who might turn out to be the love of your life, thinks Appelbees is a high end restaurant? Why? He never said that. He simply suggested meeting there for your first date.

I advise all my clients to keep their first date very casual - going out only for a drink or two (maximum) or lunch or brunch on the weekend. He might simply consider this place to be a casual atmosphere to eliminate any stress for both of you.

Also, why would you need or require a high end restaurant for a first date? That would put more pressure on both of you. I would never suggest that for a first date.

My answer is simple. Keep the date simple. Go to Appelbees and keep an open mind on hopefully your future husband. Dating is stressful enough. Enjoy your first date. I hope you like him. - MTN

I want children is our age difference too big an issue?

Dealing with an age difference
Dear MTN,

I need your help about a guy I want to date...My mother is giving me a very hard time about this situation but she reads and enjoys your column so I know she trusts you.

I met this guy at work and he's been flirting with me for six months now. The problem to my mother is that he's in his sixties and I am only 25. I know it sounds like a large gap, but he looks much younger and I am very mature for my age...I own my own business and my own home. I am personally fine with his age. I do not want to have children so what is the problem?

Please give my mom and I your advice on this...

A million thank yous. - Tiffany

Dear Tiffany,
Wow, that is a large age difference. In my opinion as long as you know you do not want children, and if you think you are compatible to him and are attracted to him, I see no reason why you shouldn't at least give it a try. Sorry mom. I do believe in fate though, so if it isn't meant to be, it won't be. And as you already know, if we push our children in one way, it only makes them go the other. Give her your support and see what happens. He just might make your daughter happy, and I'm sure that is your ultimate goal...Good luck. - MTN

How to break up - knowing when it's time to quit or try to mend a relationship

Dear MTN,

I know you are a Matchmaker and try to get people together, but my question is a little complicated.  I wish to break up with the man I am dating, and need your help.  Do you also give advice on how to break up with someone?

I have been dating Warren for almost a year now.  He’s in his sixties and just recently came out of a long term relationship. At first he was everything I was looking for.  He is handsome, successful, owns his own business, is family oriented and pays for all of our dates.  I was extremely happy for the first six months.  I only started to get suspicious when I asked to meet his family and for him to meet my family.  I think six months of dating is a proper time limit to go by.  Once I said this, things changed.  Now he is distant, I have to make all the calls, he breaks dates, and says he’s not ready to meet my family and vice versa.  I’ve had it with him, and for the past five months I’ve tried to break up with him numerous times since I know this relationship is going nowhere.

Help me dump him!

Thanks, Margaret

Dear Margaret,

You are right that it is my job to keep couples together and help single people meet one another.  I am not in the business of breaking someone up.  But you have a question and a problem, and that is what I am here for.

If you have been trying to break up with him numerous times, and he keeps coming back, I would assume that it’s because he cares a great deal about you.  Maybe instead of trying to “dump him” try a more positive approach.  Go out with him and have a heart to heart talk about everything you told me.  It probably is that he’s so used to being single that he doesn’t know how to properly treat you the way you need.  It might only take for you to tell him what you need.  If he does it, great!  If he can’t do it, then just tell him it is truly over and to respect your wishes.  Good luck and enjoy your summer. - MTN

To keep my girlfriend or to have a child?

Welcome my single readers

Welcome summer; the greatest season of the year!

Dear MTN,

Hi, I love reading your column every week and I think if you can't help me with my problem then I will be coming in for a consultation to be a part of your service. I have been dating Mary for ten years now. We met in Ireland and when I went home for the holidays and when I came back here she came with me. She lived with me right from the start. We both decided that neither one of us needed to get married. Her parents were divorced, so she never wanted to get married. I was fine with that. She is a beautiful woman and is 10 years older than me. I never cared about her age either. We've had a great 10 year run until recently.

I decided about a month ago that I would like to have a child. I am turning 40 in a couple of months. I realize the obvious that if I want kids I can't have them with Mary. What should I do? Thanks for your help. - Tom

Dear Tom,

Now that things are different than they were 10 years ago, you have to make a major decision. It is very understandable that you are turning 40 and you are now wanting to have a child.

The only advice I can give you is to realize what you want for your future. In ten years from now, do you want to be with Mary, but without children, or do you want to have taken the chance that you broke up with Mary and found someone else and had a child with them. Only you can decide that. Just keep in mind that it is not easy to find love. You have love now. If you break up with Mary it's not like you just snap your fingers and you have a new younger girl that you will fall in love with and have a child with. Best of luck of you in your decision. - MTN

Two Timing Friend

Hi Maureen,

I need your help.  My girlfriend Sharon came to visit me from Ireland and she asked if she could date my ex-boyfriend. John and I had gone out together for five years and almost got engaged, but decided we would be better off as friends.  We both agree to this day that our friendship is fantastic and we are lucky to have each other.

I told her it was okay, since we broke up years ago, but though it was strange that she asked me that.  I personally would never have asked her to do that if the roles were reversed.

But then she ended up spending the entire week with him, and even stayed at his house, and I got both annoyed and even a little jealous.  I feel like she used me, and that her agenda the entire time was to only come to see him.  I had the whole week planned and I did not get to see her the whole week.  She is supposed to be one of my best friends.

Not only am I jealous, the situation is even worse.  She told both John and I that she has a boyfriend in Ireland which she never told me about and that even though she likes John, she can't pursue the relationship.  Basically she said she wanted to see if John was better for her than her Irish boyfriend and decided that he's not.  Now he is heart broken.  Should I tell her I never want to speak to her again or am I over reacting? Best regards to you.  - Chelsea

Dear Chelsea,

She is not a good friend.  She basically used you and your friend John, and left him heart broken and you jealous, which is very normal for you to feel.

I think you are right that she used this trip just to see him and to compare him to her boyfriend back in Ireland.  My suggestion to you is next time she asks to come and visit you, simply say you are busy that week.

If it comes down to her asking more than once, then you can take the time to tell her how you feel about how she treated you and your friend and that you're not going to let that ever happen again.

I wouldn't bring it up now because she sounds like someone who enjoys drama, and she probably will like to know all the drama that she caused.  By not talking to her now, you will probably drive her crazy.  That will hopefully teach her a good lesson.  Thank you for writing. - MTN

Advice for 'Friends with Benefits' from Maureen Tara Nelson

Maureen Tara Nelson
Dear MTN,

I really need your help!  I read your column every week and trust that if anyone can help me with this, it is you.

I started seeing this guy over five years ago and while we were dating things were great and we both said we loved each other.  But when he went away to school we decided it wouldn't be in our best interest to try to have a long distance relationship and decided to remain friends but we would both date other people.  He has been back a year, and we are both single now and have been "friends with benefits" for the past year. We have discussed getting back together, but I am scared to make the jump into boyfriend/girlfriend because if it does not work out, I lose one of my best friends. I love having him as a friend and would never want to lose that. What does a girl do?  HELP! - Dani

Dear Dani,

I am a big believer of guys and girls being "just friends."  In my opinion, since you value his friendship so much, I would suggest you continue your friendship with him, and see if fate ever changes your friendship into being boyfriend/girlfriend again.  What I do want to stress to you is the danger in being "friends with benefits." It is very easy for guys to handle that type of relationship.  It is much harder for us girls...If you are going to remain friends, I strongly suggest you just keep it friends.

Why should he get the benefit of "friends with benefits?"  What exactly do you get emotionally from that type of relationship.  Emotionally you get nothing.  Don't fool yourself into thinking you are happy with that.  Think of it as he gets either or.  Without the "benefits" part, see how or if your relationship changes.  Then decide how you truly feel.

Remember what the old saying is, why buy the cow when the milk is for free!  It still pertains today.  Good luck and please keep me posted on how it works out. - MTN

PERSONAL MESSAGE TO ANONYMOUS...No I am not dating that guy you wrote in about, but I thank you for taking the time to give me the "information on him", and for you looking out for me in case I was.  I think you made the right decision to tell the police about him in the problem you have with him, so in your case you get either your money back or the work completed properly. I am sure the police will take care of it for you.  I am however, interested in why you thought I would be dating him?  If you could take a minute and let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks, XXXXXXXX
